Year End Polls - a Tvbsquare Tradition

Since the year 2004, Tvbsquare started to run a series of year end polls, now it has become a proud tradition of the website. This year, starting today, we will begin to run 22 different polls to decide 2009's best and worst.

After running the polls for a while, I started to feel harder and harder to find the nominations of each poll, because I don't watch as many series as before. It's sad that we have fewer and fewer good series, but we can still mange to find the nominations...

This is our fifth year to do a year end poll series, and we want to do something special. In my blog, I will like to share with you about my thoughts on the nominees, and how did I come up with the nominations, etc. At the same time, you can vote at the Tvbsquare Website "Votes" section.

Our first poll: Best New Faces
Last year's winner: Konnie Lui - Catch Me Now

This is the poll about fresh blood and fresh meat who needs a little more "cooking", we like to call them new stars until they can show some rooms for improvements.

This year, I came up with 12 nominees, what a surprise?! It's hard to find "new faces" now, it's even harder to find good ones...

Aimee Chan - Burning Flame 3
I am not sure how in the world she can win the most improved star in TVB Awards ceremony, all I know is that her yelling and crying totally annoys me. She needs a lot more "cooking" to be consider as "improved".

Elanne Kwong - E. U.
She totally surprised me in E. U. I really enjoyed her relationship with Ron. My vote is on her. But, not so sure if she will act in any other TVB series...

Kam Kong - E. U.
I know what you thinking, you are surprised to see this actor in my poll. Well, I have to nominate him, because he is THE best character (other than Michael Tse) in E. U., his role is so unforgettable, and he speaks Mandarin! My vote is on him.

Jeanette Leung - Beauty of the Game, The
I just saw her in the latest series I am watching (which, I am also about to give up), The Beauty of the Game.

Kelvin Leung - Rosy Business
I didn't notice him much in Rosy Business, but since that series is too popular, I had to find some new faces to fill this poll, so here he goes.

Leung Ka Ki - E. U.
I just remember she is the medicine bag. Whether you like her or not, it's up to you to decide.

Macy Chan - D.I.E. Again
Great character, good actress, I think she should be the one that is most improved. I think she has great potentials in the future. My vote is on her.

Mandy Wong - A Chip Off The Old Block
She is my most favorite character in the Old Block (other than Myo, of course), she is very cute with or without the glasses. I love the way she is so blind without her glasses. Very cute actress, has great potentials too. My vote is on her.

Meini Cheung - Sweetness in the Salt
I forgot who she is, what role she played. After I found 11 nominations, I didn't like the number 11, so I had to find one more to make it prettier. So, here she is. If you remember about her role, please let me know... (this is what I call, filling the poll)

Stephen Huynh - Stew of Life, The
He is in my "New Face" poll so many times already, never thought he would advance to the "improved" poll. But, I think, this year, he is getting little better, just hope he will not play the same character over and over again.

Suki Chui - Rosy Business
She is really cute in Rosy Business, I didn't like her before, but now, I think I have changed my opinions about her, she has rooms to improve, and for that, I am going to cast my vote on her.

YoYo Chen - Beyond The Realm Of Conscience
Some people are born to play bad characters, YoYo Chen is such an actress, this year, she proves that she can be evil in Beyond, as Tavia's apprentice. My vote is on her.

Have you decide which one to vote yet? Share your thoughts and comments at Tvbsquare Vote section:

TVB Anniversary Series

It is that time of the year again, the anniversary is only about one month away. To celebrate its birthday, TVB is releasing two grand productions on October 19. It seems a little risky to release two anniversary series at the same time, but starting next Monday, TVB fans around the world will start to enjoy the different styles of TVB series...

Beyond The Realm Of Conscience (宮心計)
TVB's version of "Jewel in the Palace" or a remake of "War and Beauty"?

VS.

Born Rich (富貴門)
The love and hate inside the big family, which will remind you of "Secret of the Heart", "Golden Faith", etc.

Challenge 1: The Poster

Winner: tied. Both poster has lots of people in it, which matches the grand production style.

Challege 2: The Themesong
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHKLkGd667Q (BTROC)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oohjzIdzc9c (BR)

Winner: Born Rich. Gallen's themesong is purely awesome, it sounds very much like "Secret of the Heart", which reminds me a lot of great series in the 90's.

Challenge 3: The Costume

Winner: Beyond The Realm Of Conscience, no doubt, TVB has put in great efforts in designing the costume. Including the accessories. TVB is always good at ancient costume designs.

Challenge 4: The "Guru"
Both series has very strong cast, of course, with a strong line up of casts, there must be one or two "Guru" behind them. In "Beyond The Realm Of Conscience", Michelle Yim and Susanna Kwan are such Guru, who will bring a lot of great acting skills to the screen. In "Born Rich", the comeback of Ray Lui, Gallen Lo, Jamie Chik are consider long time actors and actress. They know more about acting than anyone else in TVB.

Winner: Beyond The Realm Of Conscience, I can't get enough of Michelle Yim and Susanna Kwan together. Every time I saw the two of them, I know there must be great chemistry. Same apply to this time, I can't hardly wait to see their performances on screen.

Challenge 5: The Come Back

Both Cheung Kwok Keung and Susan Tse came back to TVB this year. We certainly hope to see more of them in the future. Ray Lui and Jamie Chik were long-time-no-see stars, it's exciting to see them back. But, the most exciting part is to wait for Kenix's come back.

Winner: Born Rich. Mainly because of Ray and Kenix. I can't wait to see their performances again.

Challenge 6: The Air Ratings?

Well, are you more into a Palace love and hate series, or are you more into a Rich Family love and hate series? It is up to you to decide. As for me, I will watch both series.

Winner: I have a strange feeling that BTROC will lead the air rating.

My name is Ox...

My name is Ox, and I am stubborn.

All my life, I have believed in one thing, and one thing only: If I put up 120% of effort, I will get good results in return. It always worked... When I was little, I moved to the city to study, back then, I did not know any English, so my grades were not as good, but I have tried so hard to improve my English skills, it helped me to get into College and finally graduate from college. When I was working at the Emergency Unit, I worked extra hard to study medical skills, and finally, I was able to get a chance to join for the fire department. When I was a fireman, I made sure my team members and I worked hard to keep in shape and fully trained. When I was in coma... (oh, yes, coma, that was a long story) I worked too hard to try to wake up even though everyone else thought it was impossible for me to wake again. When I lost my leg, (yet, another long story) I was able to fight and learn how to walk again...

I know every time I worked hard, good results will come. I never stopped believing this, but when it comes to love, things just went complicated... Ah Ying, the love of my life, only she keeps telling me that she doesn't love me. Sometimes, I felt that I can not function without her, because I just love her too much, yes, I am selfish, and I don't understand what she really likes. Sometimes, as a boyfriend, I always tell her what to do, and what not to do. Yes, I agree I may hurt her feelings a million times, I made her very unhappy. But, I am human, human makes that kind of mistakes, especially for an ox like me. I am stubborn... I understand why she broke up with me, (sigh...) but if she really doesn't love me, why bother visiting me in the hospital? Why bother record that message for me? Gosh, that message is really killing me... (sigh again) Why did she ever recorded that, I don't understand. When I woke up, why didn't she just tell me, she is not my girlfriend, she is just a friend who wants me to recover. Why bother give me all that memories back, and all the sudden tells me that all her feelings were changed??!!!!

Feelings were changed?! What do I know?! I was in coma when Rex and Ah Ying had a near death experienment, which made you guys love each other so deeply. (Oh, Rex, my best friend, I owe you too much) I had no idea how you guys developped your feelings toward each other. I was in coma! So, I was shocked to learn the fact that Ah Ying doesn't love me, instead, she loves Rex. I made some stupid mistakes when I was mad, eventually, that cost my leg. I deserved it, because I was mad, I was mean, and I was crazy. Now, I am regretting for all the things I have done.

Oh my gosh, the water is coming into my nose, I can feel it is going through my mouth, and slowly into my lungs. Am I going to die? Wait, wait, I don't want to die! Yes, I lost the love of my life, and Rex, my best friend, how would I ever repay you? Can you believe it? I told Rex two times that we can't be friends anymore. The first time, Rex was more upsetting, he thought I used him to get what I wanted. It was a complete misunderstanding. The second time, I knelt down before him to beg him to give up Ah Ying. Oh my gosh, why did I do that? I was selfish, I only thought about myself. When Rex told me he will not give up on Ah Ying as well, my heart broke. I could not control my feelings. So, I told him that we can't be friends. Gosh, I really regret these. He is my best friend, why did I do all this to hurt his feelings? Rex, would you ever ever forgive me? I know you would, you never blamed me, but I can't even forgive myself... Rex, I owe you too much, if I can ever ever use my life to repay you, I would! You are the one tells me that: out of difficulties, comes miracles. I always believed it. I always do, but it just never worked with Ah Ying...

Well, here I am, in this water tank. I guess I did helped you to get out of the fire. But, I think I still owe you a lot. I can never say enough sorry to you, but I just wish that I have the chance to be your friend forever. I just wish that I can forgive myself and learn to let go. Yes, I can let go! I felt so much pressure in the water, and the fire is right above me, but yes, I can let it go. Ah Ying, I am going to forget you. I am going to let you go...

Oh gosh, I am not really thinking about Ah Ying right now. How strange, in my head right now is Ah June. She was a nurse, she was the one helped me to learn to walk again. She was the one helped me discover the new me. (Sigh...) I need to travel with her, I need to tell her that I care about her!

I can't die! I can't stay here! Someone help me! I have to tell Ah June about my feelings. But, I don't have air, water keeps coming into my lungs... (Sigh...) This is a weried feeling when you don't want to die. It is easier to end my life volunteerly, I did that once. I was at the top of the building and I almost jumped, but my father's phone call saved my life. At then, I realized I have someone I need to take care. I can't be selfish, I can't die yet...

Well, my life did not end then, it certainly will not end here! I went through too much to let it end. I hope right now, everyone can forgive me, and I can forgive myself too. Come on, I don't want to die here. Someone help!

Oh wait, I hear something, people calling my name... Rex, I heard you... Yes, I want to wake up! Save me! Keep helping me! Encore! I can hear you too! The water from my lungs just came out, I opened my eyes, and I saw so many people around me, they were laughing, and I am laughing too...

This is my new life, and I can taste it.

Wong He & Myolie Wu, The Pair

Seven years apart, we finally see Wong He and Myolie Wu got pair up again in a TVB series. What an unlikely chance is that?! Well, here is a breakdown of the two unique chemistry they share on screen...

2002, Doomed to Oblivion
Myolie was Wong He's second wife, also the third woman he is in love with. When the two of them got married, Wong He did not like Myolie at all, later on, Wong He got into lots of trouble, Myolie never gave up and always supported Wong He, and slowly, she earned his love, and the two lived happily ever after.
Chemistry rating: 8 out of 10. Their love story was emotional but short. Myolie only appeared towards the end of the series. But overall, their chemistry was bitter-sweet and cute.

2009, Burning Flame 3
I only watched first 8 episodes so far. What can I say, there are two reasons you just won't like this chemistry at all. Reason 1, the producer simplify don't want them to end up together. Myolie suppose to pair up with Kevin instead, and the producer will make all the ways possible to make that happen. Reason 2, look at them now, they just don't match at all! I just can't find one single element they share in common...
Chemistry rating: 2 out of 10, strange pairing. No matter what happens, I just don't hope they will end up together.

Rosy Business vs. Safe Guards

After watching Rosy Business, I can't help myself notice many similarities between this series and Safe Guards, since both series were the best series TVB made in years...

Sheren Tang vs. Steven Ma

Both are kind and smart, both are responsible for the big business, both holding the big keys to the big business. Both will get blamed whenever they do things. In Rosy Business, Sheren was able to hold the keys for a long time, but she had to fight to keep the keys. In Safe Guards, Steven did not get the keys until later time, but he fought his way to get those.

Wayne Lai vs. Wayne Lai

There are no similarities between these two characters. Wayne in Safe Guards is very useless, and lazy, he always make trouble, and expect others to clean his mess. He did not make much contributions other than give the keys to Steven. Wayne in Rosy Business is completely different, even though he also make lots of trouble, but Sheren is willing to help him because he was really smart, he is able to think something that no one else will ever think of. In Rosy Business, Wayne makes many great contributions and help Sheren to keep her keys.

Kwok Fung vs. Elliot Ngok

Both were dead. Both are the boss of a huge business, both has many sons. The only difference is Elliot has more wives. Both of them try to pass on their business to the next generation. Kwok Fung in Safe Guards always have hard time to decide who holds the key. But Elliot is more clear about who should hold the key. In other words, Elliot is smarter in this case, but he has way too many wives who like to twist his words and actions.

Ben Wong vs. Pierre Ngo

Both have the potential to become the next key holder, but both were not successful obtaining the keys. Both have affairs with other woman, both became bad when they lost the power. However, Pierre was more evil in this case.

The Letter vs. The Letter

Two different characters played by the same actress, Kara Hui. They both know how to fight, but Kara in Rosy Business was a little more afraid of everything, she learned how to be brave slowly. Both characters died in the series. Both of them left a letter to their love ones which will make the audience cry like CRAZY! In Safe Guards, Kara left the letter for her husband, saying how much she loves him, how much she dislikes him in certain ways... In Rosy Business, Kara left the letter for Ron and Sheren, telling them not to be sad, Kara also mentioned how much she enjoy to watch Ron grow... Both letters were so sad, which will cost you lots of tissues.

There are some other similarities in these two series, for example, the famous quote from Steven Ma in Safe Guards "Promote some, demote some, kill (fire) some" was also used in Rosy Business by Pierre Ngo....

By the way, both series were produced by the same producer, no wonder you can find so many things you will be attached to...

A Decade of TVB Series: 1998 - 2008 (5)

The Family Productions

The Year: 2007
Keyword: Heart of Greed

In the recent years, TVB started to focus on producing more and more series that talks about the entire family and its struggles. Many grand productions are tied with the family stories.

Rising Star: Fala Chen - Heart of Greed

Coming Back Stars: Louisa Lee Si Kei - Heart of Greed

The Year: 2008
Keyword: Bad Economics

Economics had a huge impact in 2008, less and less viewers are watching TV, ratings were not nearly as good as before. It seems like no matter whom TVB brought back, he or she may not save the ratings. Not only that, TVB also fired many workers because of the economics.

The Classic Series: Moonlight Resonance
Forgettable Series: When Easterly Showers Fall On The Sunny West
Rising Star: Kate Tsui - Moonlight Resonance
Most Surprising Act: Michelle Yim - Moonlight Resonance
Coming Back Star: Gallen Lo

Politics

The Year: 2005

In 2008, we heard lots of rumors about Charmaine Sheh and Kevin Cheng, but did you know TVB is actually "planning" this way back in 2006? In 2006, Charmaine and Kevin won the Best Actress and Best Actor awards, is that the plot that triggers their rumors today? Again, politics...

Forgettable Series: Vagabond Vigilante
Rising Star: Linda Chung - Forensic Heroes
Most Surprising Act: Ada Choi - The Dance of Passion

The Rise of the New Generation

Coming Back Star: Deric Wan - Golden Faith
Leaving Star: Felix Wong left TVB with many disappointments and started to film more movies.

Forgettable Series: The Vigilante in the Mask
Rising Stars: Shirley Yeung - Angels of Mission

A Decade of TVB Series: 1998 - 2008 (2)

Into the New Millennium

The Year: 2000
Keyword: Louis Koo

The new millennium starts with the continue success of "At the Threshold of an Era" series. TVB made a successful transition from the old era to a new era with many great series, including War of Gender, Reaching Out, Moonlight, Armed Reaction 2, etc.

The Classic Series: War of Gender
Forgettable Series: Lost In Love
Rising Star: Michelle Yip - Reaching Out
Most Surprising Act: Louis Koo - At the Threshold of an Era 2
Forgotten Star: Lee San San, she never picked up a great role in TVB series, as a result, she failed to capitalize on her popularity in the entertainment industry.

The Year: 2001
Keyword: 9-11

The world is in its tragic shape, but TVB is getting ready for a new era, some of the important starts decided to leave us, however, TVB has no worries, there is always a new generation waiting to be born.

The Classic Series: Gods of Honour
Forgettable Series: Broadcast Life

Forgotten Star: Gordon Lam, after filming Country Spirit, TVB seems to forget about his importance, Gordon left TVB quietly, and joined the film industry.
Leaving Star: Louis Koo, after filming A Step Into the Past, Louis left TVB to step into the film industry.

A Decade of TVB Series: 1998 - 2008 (1)

Before the New Millennium

In the past 10 years, there are a lot of ups and downs in TVB series. Each year, there are some returning stars and some were leaving TVB. Some stars were rising to shine, some were slowly forgotten..

Here is my countdown of the past decade of TVB Series, I hope you enjoy as I am counting down the most important decade, or perhaps the most interesting decade of TVB series.

The Year: 1998
Keyword: Healing Hands

TVB starts to make popular series that dealing with our everyday jobs. Like the doctors in Healing Hands, the firefighters in Burning Flame, etc.

The Classic Series: Secret of the Heart
Forgettable Series: Rural Hero
Rising Star: Louis Koo - Burning Flame
Most Surprising Act: Nick Cheung - Secret of the Heart
Forgotten Star: Jackie Liu, for some reason, his sereis became more and more forgettable, such as Dark Tales 2, Rural Hero, Side Beat, etc, etc.

The Year: 1999
Keyword: Detective Investigation Files IV

Louis Koo became the most popular star in TVB, along with Gallen Lo, the two of them were in a major TVB production: At the Threshold of an Era, which considered as THE series of the new millennium.

The Classic Series: Witness to Prosecution
Forgettable Series: Side Beat
Rising Star: Charmaine Sheh - DIF 4
Most Surprising Act: Sunny Chan - At the Threshold of an Era
Forgotten Star: Monica Chan, her character became less and less valuable in a TVB series, that explains the fact that she is no longer filming with TVB.

The Gem of Life - Ada Choi's Wardrobe

There are 82 episodes of The Gem of Life, and I figured I will get bored at watching this series if I watch it all at once. So I decided to watch the series slowly, this way I can enjoy it much more. Last week, I started watching the series, and I "restrict" myself to watch only 1 episode a day, so far, I am at episode 7, and I found myself loving the series and its characters. Well, I can't say too many good things about the series yet, because a long series like this will begin to drag pretty soon.

After watching the first few episodes, I got addicted capturing Ado Choi's scenes, and noticed she got so many outfits. In fact, she has 15 different outfits in the first 7 episodes, that is about 2.1 outfits per episode, if this rate continues, she will have about 172 outfits in 82 episodes, that will be totally shocking. Well, not mention that she has about 160+ pairs of shoes in her wardrobe! Anyways, I started to collect all Ada's outfits in this show, we will see if she will have that many outfits or not at the end...

First of all, let us take a look at her shoes, I counted them, there are 160 pairs of shoes! She said she has to buy at least one pair every season, so that number will only get bigger!

Ada in black outfits: for some reason, she looks hot in black!

White or mix with white:

Red (this is my favorite so far, hope to see her more in red later):

Wayne Lai: His Past to Present + my top 10

Picture sources: http://www.laiyiucheung.com

1986, Wayne's career started as playing "the extras" in TVB series. His characters' names included "Ah Ha", "Ah Xia", "Big D", etc, etc. Slowly, Wayne gained more and more parts in the TVB series. Starting by playing the famous Zhou BoTong in various TVB series:

1992 Rage And Passion

1993 The Condor Heroes Return

1994 The Legend of the Condor Heroes

1995 The Return of the Condor Heroes

After that, Wayne started to play the major supporting roles. In 1996, his Zhu Bajie (the pig) in "Journey to the West" made Wayne a super "supporting star".

12 years passed, Wayne played various supporting roles that out-shine the main characters, and finally, in 2008, he got his first Supporting Actor award. Not only that, he is now becoming a leading actor in a new series, "Pages Of Treasures".

I became a big Wayne fan ever since "Journey to the West", and I am very happy about Wayne's career boost. Looking back at Wayne's acting career, here is my Top 10 Most Favorite Wayne Characters.

10. Steps - Lee Lik Keung
This is actually the first series Wayne started to be a lead.

09. Moonlight Resonance - Nin Chi Yung
It is a pity that Wayne only appeared in the first couple episodes in this series. I really love his relationship with Hor Ma and her family.

08. Devil's Disciples - Tung Fong Mo Kik
The funny and caring master of Bosco.

07. The Gentle Crackdown II - Dai Tsung Man
This is the series made Wayne the Best Supporting Actor. He plays two characters here (twins), one is corrupted, the other is an honest and intelligent man.

06. Greed Mask - Au Man Wai
This character always creeps me out because of his (her) identity, but I just can't stop thinking about it. He (she) is one of the most creepy TVB character you will never forget.

05. The Gentle Crackdown - Si Kei Wong
Of course, I like the first Gentle Crackdown much more. Si Kei Wong is also very intelligent (compare to Dai Tsung Man), and he is more fun to watch.

04. The Return of the Condor Heroes - Zhou BoTong
Till this day, I still can't find another person that can top Wayne's version of Zhou BoTong.

03. The Pig - Journey to the West
Wayne did an awesome job to show the pig's laziness and his power of love, I especially love his "thousand love affairs".

02. The Conqueror's Story - Hon Shun
One of the smartest person in early Chinese history, and Wayne is a perfect fit for this character. It is a pity to see how his intelligence can also kill him at the end.

01. Safe Guards - Sheung Chung
His character is useless, a true trouble maker, however, you just can not stop loving him because of the way he supports Steven Ma...
