2006 Best TVB Scenes of the Year

2006 Best TVB Scenes of the Year

Collections of the best scenes of the year... The following are my favorite scenes (not in order) of the entire year ;-) *Note: I did not include the series I didn't watch: Dicey Business and Vagabond Vigilante.

Series: Glittering Days
Who: Susanna Kwan
What: Singing "Just live for you for a day, this is my wish..." in the recording studio. In the studio, Chris Lai (her son) is playing the guitar, she was singing in tears, and the others were there to support her. This is her last song before she lost her battle with cancer.

Series: Safe Guards
Who: Wayne Lai
What: Wayne gives a powerful speech about Steven, and he gives the Bureau keys to Steven and asks Steven to take control. This is actually my most favorite scene of the whole year, and it only last about 9 minutes.

Series: War and Destiny
Who: Ron Ng and Leila Tong
What: "If you jump, I jump!" This is the most common line, but it's also a great line. In this scene, Leila wants to jump off the building, but Ron stopped her and saved her life ;-)

Series: Dance of Passion, The
Who: Ada Choi
What: She takes her hair down, the wind blows her hair away, her hair touches Bowie's hand, Bowie walks towards Ada, he could not see, he could not hear. Gigi screams and asks why Ada wants to die for Bowie. Ada says: "I don't have any more strength to take care of anyone.."

Series: Dance of Passion, The
Who: Gigi Lai and Bowie Lam
What: Gigi is Bowie's ears, she is his eyes, she is willing to take care of Bowie without letting him know who she is.. When Bowie finally realized Gigi is the one took care of him, the two of them broke down to tears...

Series: Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion
Who: Raymond Lam and Charmaine Sheh
What: A force kiss on the brige, following Charmaine's slap on Raymond's face. What else do you expect?

Series: Men in Pain
Who: Ron Ng and Toby Leung
What: Toby reads the future diary Ron wrote to her, the diary talks about how their baby grow, how the baby first said "mom", how the baby walk for the first time... all the sweet moments, which makes Toby to stay in Hong Kong with Ron. I love the scene because of the future diary, also because of Ron's song in the background...

Series:La Femme Desperado
Who: Raymond Lam
What: This is one of the cutest scene in the series, which shows us Raymond, the ghost ;-)

Series:Under the Canopy of Love
Who: Bosco Wong
What: It's a pity that Bosco can never win Niki's heart. He sacrificed so much, mentally, physically, emotionally. It's sad that we will never know who is going to fix Bosco's broken heart...

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!!!! I am sorry the blog hasn't updated for long.... It's holidays, I need some time off, haha...

What did you get for Christmas? I got lots stuff, including some games that will take over my TVB watching time. I also got some cool gift cards, that gives me more excuse to shop around. Now, the new year is almost here, what do we expect of 2007? Let's see...

1. A better TVB series, if one is not enough, we expect more.
2. A better anniversary show, it's gonna be TVB's 40th anniversary soon, so we need a good anniversary show!
3. While TVB is 40 years old, I will be turning 5 years old on March!!!! It will be a small anniversary for tvbsquare as well ;-)
4. The Year of Pig!!! I love pigs!

The Biggest Disappointment

2006 is almost end, for lots of people, this is a good year, but for many others, this is also a bad year. For me, it's somewhere in between, however, we do find some major disappointment throughout the whole year. (Special note: some of the items below can be offensive and biased, be aware ;-)

#10. The Beauties Can Not Cook: The whole idea behind the variey show "Beautiful Cooking" is to show us how many beauties who can not cook, however it is kinda sad to watch how the contestants cook, it seems like they are proud of the fact that they can not cook. In the Anniversary show, I felt embarrassed when Dodo, Liza and Nancy, the three big sisters of TVB competes each other on cooking, wearing expensive jeweleries. It's OK that they can not cook, but they really don't have to show off their poor skills with expensive jeweleries.

#9. Most Improving Star, Linda Chung? I am sorry to say, I am not a fan of Linda anymore. Aftering watching her not-so-improved perofrmances in Biter Bitten and Forensic Heroes, I felt TVB has over promoted her.

#8. Dance of Passion: Too much hype, too much expectation, but so little results. This is what happened if TVB is over-promoting a series. However, TVB continues to make that mistake, so, don't give too much hope if you heard too much about a series...

#7. Yumiko vs. Eric Tsang vs. Nancy Sit: Recently, TVB's annual charity show gets everyone's attention. Disappointment #1, Yumiko's dropping pants overshadowed the real meaning behind a charity show. Disappointment #2, after the whole incident, Eric said something like, "can you rewind that and watch again?" I know he doesn't mean it, but I can still blame him for saying such stupid words. He is a very experienced emcee, and I know it's not an "accident" for him to say something like that. Disappointment #3, later, Eric blamed on Nancy Sit for not correcting him during the show. Disappointment #4, today, we just heard a news that Yumiko's incident might be intentional after all, o woo... it's almost like the Janet Jackson incident in Super Bowl years ago, if this is an intentional effort, this will be a very big disappointment for TVB.

#6. The Quality of the Series: TVB made more Ancient series than Modern series this year, however, TVB aired more Modern series than Ancient series. What happened? Why so many Ancient or Period Dramas got warehoused? Are they really not so good? If the quality is not good, why does TVB spending so much money producing it? There is a famous Chinese saying, "if you don't have a big head, don't wear the big hat." The overall quality of TVB series in this year has decreased A LOT, why is that? Maybe TVB produced too many series? Maybe TVB values itself too high?

#5. Elaine Yiu in Safe Guards: Let's just say, Safe Guards will be PERFECT without Elaine.

#4. Miss Hong Kong Can't Speak or Read Chinese! I was very disappointed when I was watching the Miss Hong Kong show, the show is worse and worse each year, and the contestants can't event speak or read Chinese! The whole idea behind Miss Hong Kong is to promote Hong Kong culture, but if you can't even speak or read the language, how can you promote the culture? In this year's show, during the questions and answers session, so many contestants said they can not read the words, or does not know how to answer the question in Chinese. That's just embarrassing...

#3. Myolie Wu's Weight vs. To Grow with Love: After watching To Grow with Love, I felt bad for Myolie, she sacrificed so much for a less-than-average-type-of-series. To tell you the truth, To Grow with Love is not a good series at all, the story is poor, and I couldn't find the real meaning behind the series. From the beginning to the end, I don't know what does the series trying to present. All I noticed was Myolie's weight and performances. She put up so much effort for this series, but it's not really worth it... Let's learn from the mistakes, you can not sacrifice too much for a TVB series.

#2. Wayne Lai didn't win Best Supporting Actor Award: I have been waiting almost all year for him to win that award, but that didn't happen. This makes me hate TVB for a very long time, and I will continue to hate TVB until further notice. For me, this is the biggest disappointment of the year, and that closely relates to the number one disappointment of the year below...

#1. Kenny Wong and his upzipped shirt: I don't like Kenny for many number of reasons. First, his "shirt-less" performances in DOP. The character is very useless, and he never zip up his shirt, for that, I admit, he is kinda sexy, however, he can not act. His eyes never talks, and I always thought he is reading the lines and not acting it. Second, he took away the Best Supporting Actor award from Wayne. I totally hate Kenny for that reason. Third, his "shirt-less" performances in TVB Anniversary award show, he can not dance, and he totally destroys Kenneth Ma's effort in dancing. What's up with him and his unzipped shirt? Is that a good way to promote someone?

OK, I am done with the disappointment recap, I hope you didn't get offended too much. I am sure some of you might disagree with me, but don't take anything too personally, as I said on #3 item, you can not sacrifice too much for a TVB series...

Now, tell me, what are your major disappointment of the year?

2006 Power Rankings

2006 TVB Square's Power Rankings refers to the TVB stars, series or any other TVB related things that grabbed the most attention within the year of 2006:

#10.
Yo, yo, Ekin! OK, Ekin and Gigi broke apart, Yoyo stepped in. Who is who's better halves? It's not for us to decide. Is Yoyo the reason Ekin and Gigi broke up? Who knows? However, Yoyo did get a lot more attention since Ekin and Gigi broke apart.

#09.
The Weddings of 2006: so many celebrities married in the year of 2006, is this the best year to marry? If you missed it, when is the next best year? The most expensive wedding in 2006? I believe Hacken Lee will be rewarded for that. The most shocking wedding in 2006? That will be Nicholas and Cecilia's secret wedding.

#08. Who is leaving, who is in? Kenix and Frankie both decided to continue their career in Mainland. That's the biggest lost of the year. How about Jessica Husuan? Is she staying? We got people leaving, but we also got people coming back. This year, we got Ada Choi, Steven Ma, Benny Chan, Florenence Kwok and many others return to TVB to film series.

#07. Ella's incident. The forced kiss on stage. You will never know what's going to happen on the stage, the Entertainment world is crazy. The celebrities need to be more careful around the fans.

#06.
Myolie's Weight. It takes so much effort to "destroy" your figure to film a TV series (especially for a TVB series), gaining and loseing weight is not very easy to do. But, Myolie did it in a very short time.

#05:
I betrayed Sammul Chan. Another scandal, very recent one. Who betrayed Sammul Chan? I believe that person will be me, since I am not his biggest fan. However, TVB as a company is very responsible for this scandal. As we all realized, Sammual is the only one from Olympic Six, who wasn't heavily promoted by TVB.

#04.
LFD. I don't need to say more, this is the best air rating series of the year.

#03. Charmaine Sheh, grabbing two awards at TVB Anniversary show. 9 years ago, she is the Miss Hong Kong who can not act. Today, she is TVB's best actress of the year.

#02.
TVB's son, Kevin Cheung. Most shocking award winner of the year is Kevin Cheung, of course, he is TVB's "son". Does he deserves the Best Actor award? Or, is he too cute to win an award? Why is he TVB's son?

#01.
Hong Kong Press. We learned how bad the Hong Kong press can be. The reporters are mean, they made up stories, they took "naked" pictures, they made up gay stories. Too many scandals are happening in this year. The biggest upset of the year, of course, that will be Gillian Chung's "naked" picture.

Heroes

Couple days ago, my blog is back after two months of absence. Yesterday, I finally finished watching Land of Wealth, also the first series I finished watching in two months. Also yesterday, I wrote my first review in two months. Everything related to TVB seems slow for me now. I did gave up TVB for almost two months. So, what was I doing? Of course, watching American TV!

My favorite show on air right now is "Heroes", my favorite line to say is "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World". It seems like I am more obsessed with that show more than anything now. If you haven't watched "Heroes", that's too bad, you got to watch it ;-)

For TVB, I believe there is a better line to say: "Save the air ratings, Save the TVB series". It's all about the air ratings. Who saves the air rating, who is the hero. So, who are the heroes in 2006? Let's see...

1. La Femme Desperado, the number one air rating series, of course earning everyone's respect.
2. Bobby Au Yeung, both of his series (A Pillow Case of Mystery and Forensic Heroes) were the air rating savers of the year.
3. Kevin Cheung, the black horse of the year, but all his series were able to draw enough attention.
4. Safe Guards, if this series was released in the years before, it might not be as popular. I think this is the surprise series of the year, also my favorite series of 2006.

Other than the heroes, we also got the "destroyers". We won't have people saving the world if no one is destroying it. Same as for the air ratings, if no series has low air ratings, we won't be talking about the series with the high air ratings...

1. Dance of Passion, the more hope you got, the less satisfied you will get.
2. Sonija Kwok, so sad for her, both of her series (Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion and Land of Wealth) were the low air rating series of the year. We don't know how Warlords will do in December, but I watched the series already, it's great in the beginning but sucks towards the end...
3. Moses Chan, same for him, Dance of Passion and Land of Wealth didn't do so good.
4. Hail the Judge, starring Dayo Wong. Basically, TVB brought in this series to kill the air ratings, this is the lowest air rating series of the year.

* don't throw hate mails at me, I am only summarizing the air ratings... By the way, I love Sonija and Moses ;-)

2006 Warehouse Series

A warehouse series is a series that didn't release to the Hong Kong audiences, instead, the series was released to the oversea fans first. There is chance for the warehouse series to be aired in HK after releasing in oversea, but the chances are small.

In 2006, the warehouse series included:
Vagabond Vigilante - starring Sonjia Kwok, Sunny Chan and Kenny Ho. I never watched this series, so sad. I wanted to watch it, but I never got the chance to rent this series. The chance of releasing this series in HK - not likely at all.

Au Revoir Shanghai - starring Bosco Wong, Michael Miu, Anne Heung and Shirley Yeung. I believe I am going to say this is the worst series of the year, so sorry to the Bosco fans, I really have no idea why this series was even produced. Maybe that's why it got warehoused. The storyline was horrible... The chance of releasing this series in HK - very unlikely.

The Price of Greed, starring Bosco Wong, Sammul Chan, Shirley Yeung and Kate Tsui. This is a 2006 series, and it was on the program highlight many times, but it never got aired. In December, this will become a warehouse series officially and to be released to oversea fans. So sad for Bosco, this is his second series to be warehoused in just one year...

War and Destiny - starring Ron Ng, Myolie Wu, Leila Tong and Sunny Chan. A grand production series, but also got warehoused, maybe the HK audiences are not interested in the war in Mainland. But I cared about it a lot, since I grew up in Mainland. I think the overall story was good, but not good enough to get everyone's interest. The chance of releasing this series in HK - 50% if TVB has nothing to air in the beginning of next year. But, I think TVB has too many series to air, so it's not likely for this series to be aired..

Face to Fate - starring Frankie Lam, Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung. This is the best warehouse series of the year if I didn't watch the last 4 or 5 episodes. I really love the story in the beginning, it is interesting and fun to watch. However, the later part gets messy, maybe that's why the series was warehoused. This series also brings the Fantasy style back. It is consider as a success, I believe TVB knows it, that's why TVB is making more Fantasy alike series now. The chance of releasing this series in HK - not likely.

Have you noticed, all th
e warehouse shows in 2006 were all Ancient series? Is TVB getting less confident about releasing Ancient series?

Also, one warehouse series was aired, that was Trimming Success, starring Kevin Cheung, Nadia Chan and Sharon Chan. This series was first released in oversea, after the success of Under the Canopy of Love, TVB decided to air this series to promote Kevin. As a result, the air rating for this series wasn't bad.

Some other 2006 Productions was never aired, and also didn't get warehoused. But the chance of warehousing these series are likely:

First, Devil's Disciples, starring Kevin Cheung, Bosco Wong, Bernice Liu and Sharon Chan. This was showing at the 2006 TVB Sales Presentation, and it was in the program highlights for so many times. The chance of airing this series in 2007 - very unlikely, because it is a fantasy, kung fu type of series. TVB is still trying out this type of series.

The Master of Tai Chi, starring Raymond Lam and Myolie Wu. We have been waiting all year for this series, but it never aired. The chance of airing this series in 2007 - very likely. I think over 90% of chance that TVB will air this one. I hope I am right, because the series can be very interesting to watch.

The Ultimate Crime Fighter, starring Moses Chan, Kevin Cheung and Yuen Biao, the series was also in the 2006 sales presentation, but didn't get the chance to be released in 2006. The chance of airing this series is about 60% because it is in the 2007 program highlight.

Heavenly In Laws, starring Joey Leung, Nancy Sit and Linda Chung. I think the chance for airing this series is very low, because some HK audiences haven't forgive Joey Leung yet. It will be a little risky to air this series...

What about Grand Production?

Since 2001, I already began to have the habit of collectiong TVB Program Highlights. My collectiong efforts helped me discovered many different things throughout the years.

Every year, TVB releases 5 different Program Highlights to the oversea fans ONLY. The first issue is always the big issue, which highlights the shows of the year. The other four are seasonal releases, which comes out every three months. Most TVB rental stores in oversea have the program highlights available for the fans who rent the series (that includes me ;-)

The big issue of the Program Highlight highlights almost everything, and it always talks about at least one Grand Production. In 2001, it was A Step Into the Past. In 2002, it was Burning Flame 2. Both Grand Productions got very good results.

In 2003, TVB started to film more and more Grand Productions, however, the results are very interesting... In 2003, Triumph in the Skies, Blade Heart, The W Files and Perish in the Name of Love were all Grand Productions. The results? Triumph in the Skies was really successful, that's no doubts, but Blade Heart ended up as one of the lowest air rating series of the year. The W Files was Gallen's latest series in TVB, however the show didn't grab everyone's attention. What happened? Who makes the decisision about the making of Grand Production? The question continues until today.

In 2004, Twin of Brothers, Riches and Stitches, War and Beauty were the Grand Productions. Of course, we don't have to talk about the success of TOB and W&B. The problem was Riches and Stitches, a grand production that was warehoused. To me, Riches and Stitches was a great show, the story was excellent and it was emotional. However, why did TVB warehoused a Grand Production? The answer remain unknow...

In 2005, we got Healing Hands 3, the worst Healing Hands series ever, but still was a grand production. Then, Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion, a 2005 Grand Production was facing the warehouse situation. TVB pushed back the release date of the series, and it wasn't aired until 2006. The result? Poor air rating, of course, as we all know. LWOLAP is one of the lowest air rating series of 2006. Who to blame? Why is a grand production not release in time?

Now, it is 2006, the situation gets worse. The Dance of Passion, War and Destiny were both Grand Productions. DOP was also a low air rating factor, as we all know, the series sucked even though the casts were excellent. For War and Destiny, it became a warehouse series. Once again. TVB decided to warehouse a grand production. We do see a repeat pattern from here...

What about 2007? We got two grand productions: First, The Drive of Life, a 60 episode series that celebrates TVB's 40th Anniversary and Hong Kong's return to China. This is a joint-production of TVB and CCTV, there is no way TVB going to warehouse this one. However, can this series bring back the excitement of TVB's grand productions? Second, 珠光寶氣, another grand production by the crew and cast of War and Beauty. Didn't they say the same thing about that for The Dance of Passion? You see how TVB likes to bring the old time back, but can they do it?

As I mentioned before, a repeat pattern of unsuccessful grand productions can be scary. Can 2007 be different? Let's hope so...

I Am Back!

After a few MONTHS, I am finally back! What happened, and what were the reasons that I almost give up my blog?

Well, during October, I almost gave up on TVB because of the series I was watching, I didn't like any of the series I was watching...

Then, it comes November, that's when I am really pissed off about TVB. OOOpps, excuse my French. I think I have told you guys before, if Wayne Lai didn't win the Best Supporting Actor, I will no longer having faith in TVB. So, that's what happened. I was so mad about the Anniversary award show, and I gave up, entirely...

Now, here comes December, after getting so many fans' email, I decided to come back, yeah! It's the end of the year, I don't have to talk about the Anniversary show anymore, because it has passed, so I will like to do the things I like the most, that's recapping.... it's that time of the year, and it's time for me to come back...

It's been a long time.. but I hope you will join me for the recap ;-) Stay tuned ;-)
