TVBsquare's Power Rankings - Jan. 2006

TVB Square's Power Rankings refers to the TVB stars, series or any other TVB related things that grabbed the most attention, and gained the most power within a particular month.

Archives:
Nov. 2005, Dec. 2005 Power Rankings

#5: TVB Square's Main Character Race - well, I try to avoid naming my own website into the power rankings, however, this time is special, as the
tvbsquare main character race generated 105195 votes from the obsessed TVB fans, this proves one thing: TVB fans rock the world ;-) This year's race generated 10 times more votes than last year's race, it's amazing. (click the links to see the results)

#4: Celebrity Families: Hacken Lee and his Marriage deal - Hacken as the big winner in this year's JSG music award, finally announced his marriage deal with his long time girlfriend. I remember everyone was "pushing" him to announce the marriage thing, and now, he is going to get married, finally! Congrats to him and his future wife ;-) Nick and Esther's Celebrity Baby - congrats to the famous TVB couple, who recently had a daughter, a very cute celebrity baby, let's hope she can grow up to be a TVB star ;-)

#3: Astro Awards - congrats once again to Charmaine Sheh and Raymond Lam, who won the Astro Awards, as well as our fans' heart. If TVB Anniversary awards can be as fair as the Astros, everything will be simple...

#2: Bosco Wong - he is one of the busiest TVB star, filming one series after another, even working with his injury! Recently, he also joined BMA, so let's hope to see Bosco's album soon. I also want to personally thank Bosco, because when fans searching "Bosco Wong" on google, TVBsquare shows up very fast, so, as Bosco becoming more and more popular, more fans will search him on Google, and as a result, more fans will know TVBsquare, so thank you, Bosco, for increasing my web traffic ;-)

#1: Ron Ng - his fame as well his CD, concert, awards (JSG+Astro+Metro), fans, anti-fans, news, pictures, magazine articles, rumors, black face, smile, friends, family and everything else you want to count on. There is a famous Chinese saying: "human afraid of becoming popular, pig afraid of becoming fat". It's hard to be a famous TVB celebrity, the entertainment industry these days can be really cruel, however, for Ron, he seems to handle everything really well...

TVBsquare Collection - part two

Join the TVB Square contest - Battle of Fans!!!!

Part two: Life before the computer
Let's see, I began my TVB watching marathon (watching one series after another) back in 1998, the longest break I took was 2 and half weeks (without watching any TVB). However, TVB Square didn't start until 2002, why? There are many reasons:

1. I didn't know how to use computer back then!!!! Can you believe it? Now, I am a computer expert.. sigh.. learning computer skills is like drinking poison...
2. I was over-obsessed with many other people, such as the Backstreet Boys. If I was a computer expert back then, I will have a site called "Backstreet Square".
3. My English was horrible, because my native is Chinese. If I know how to build a website back then, TVB Square might be in Chinese... ha..

Anyways, I want to go back to my reason 1, my life before knowing anything about computer, it was actually fun, I started my series information collection way back then. Everything is kept in big folders (see picture above, I have 4 folders like this). For each series I like, I print out the series information, the poster, and insert in my own character relationship charts.

ATE: this was the early stage of my character relation chart, everything looks messy, but that's a good chart, consider the fact there are way too many characters in ATE.

Burning Flame: this was when I started to use rulers, and use very different line connections, some of my line connections are unique, such as "one side love", "friends to enemies", etc.

Secret of the Heart: man, I can not even use computer to re-draw this one, this is the best character relationship chart I ever made! Guess what? It's in English!!!

TVBsquare Collection - part one

To encourage more fans to join the TVB Square contest - Battle of the Fans, I decided to dig out my own special collections (the ones that are not saved in my computer). Don't worry, I won't use these to enter my own contest, this is just a sign of encouragement, or a sign of my obsession.

Part one: my computer room: other than my own computer (which has all tvb and tvbsquare stuff), I also have a cabinet full of TVB stuff. Look at my bookcase for an example (click the picture to enlarge), I have movies, telemovies and series collections, most are bought from YesAsia.com, I also have VHS tapes of some of my favorite series. You will also see a collection of magazines, these are the only TVB Weekly magazines I was able to get.

Not for sale

OK, I was over-obsessed with the TVB calendar, the red envelops and the new year cards. I even made fun of the new year cards myself because I don't understand why TVB can make such great promotional items, but they won't sell those to the fans. *note: on TVB's promotional items, you can always find a line says "not for sale".

My theories?

#1. TVB doesn't have enough money to make MANY promotional items to sell, consider this: TVB fans are all over the world, and there are way too many of us.
#2. TVB is very sensitive about its own products, especially in terms of promotional items, all the products are not made for sale, TVB is over-protecting its image.
#3. TVB wants to make fans jealous, ok, we can see the images, but we can't collect them ourselves.
#4. Increasing rental activity? Well, the rental shops gave out the promotional items to active members, so I was able to get my hands on some promotional stuff for years, however, recently, TVB won't give the rental shops enough promotional items. The owners of the rental shops told me, quote and quote, "TVB doesn't send these to us anymore"... What's up with that?!
#5. I am over obsessive, what's the big deal anyway?

I hate my hosting server!

To my web hosting server: I am not going to name who you are, because I still love you and I will use you until someday, I decide to give up on you. But, I don't think that can happen anytime soon. I love the fact that you are not expensive, and provides lots of great tools, however, I just hated when sometimes you are having problems with your own server. That decreases my web traffic (I can't even access tvbsquare for this entire afternoon!!!!) I hated it when you sent some announcement like: "Hello,We are currently having problems with clust 08. Our admins are working on it. No ETA yet." What the h*** is clust 08? Do I even need to care?! This outage is way too long, the whole afternoon, I was panic over nothing, it's all your fault!

By the way, the time for Blogger's outage is only half an hour, that's way better than a whole afternoon! Come on, admins, wake up!

TVB Fonts

TVB always make similar plots, similar endings, similar love stories, similar characters, however, there is one thing TVB does not like to repeat, and that is the TVB fonts!

I began my screen capture collection when I began to build TVB Square, and I got a habbit of screen capturing the title font of the series. Surprising enough, after years of collecting screen captures, I found this fact: TVB likes to make very different and unique fonts for every single series. Most of the time, TVB even makes two completely different fonts for one series. Look at the pictures below for "War of In Law", one font is from the series itself (the title font from screen capture), the other is from the poster, these are really different. TVB can get really creative at making fonts, even more creative than making series plots, so if you will like to see my entire collection, you can browse through all my screen captures at the Review section of TVB Square site.

Do you have a TVB related collection? Submit your entry to TVBsquare's "Battle of the Fans" contest: http://www.tvbsquare.com/TVBextras/birthday/4birthday.htm

Mystery... Welcome back, Benny!

Sooner or later, TVB is going to release a series called "A Pillow Case of Mystery", which talks about mystery cases which were solved by the dreams. Very interesting concept, I am wondering if the series can solve the following mystery for me:

1. What makes Benny decide to come back with TVB? I am very excited about his return, but I also want to know the real reason behind his return.
2. Is Benny and Charmaine really dating? If so, did they really break up?
3. After watching "Whatever It Takes", I was hoping to see Benny and Annie again, which is going to happen again in this series. Don't forget about Tavia, who gets to be the main character this time, will we see a Benny-Annie-Tavia triangle or not? (the answer is NO, because I just read the character info, Annie will play as Bobby's wife.. gosh)
4. Is Bobby pair-able with Kenix? I am ok with their chemistry in "Take My Word for It", however, this time it's an ancient series, so, we will see what's going to happen.
5. How come in some Qing Dynasty series, the male characters shave their hair, but some other series, they don't? See picture A (from Pillow Case), picture B (from Silver Mouse) of Benny, I prefer him in the shaved style.

Battle of the Fans

Teaser:
(Talking to the pictures, and making fun of the new year cards, since I can't get my hands on any of those!) I saw this, and then I saw this, and then I saw
lots of these at this spot, and I was asking myself, why can't I do this? This is now my entry of my own contest "Battle of the Fans" (for category B ;-) Yes, I blur my picture on purpose, and no, I don't want to post my picture in public, this is the furthest shot I can go with:

New Series Filming - CIB Investigations

New series filming: starring Bowie Lam, Wong Hei, Christine Ng and Maggie Siu. Welcome back, Ah Hei, I have been waiting for your return for ages! (haha.. a year is way too long for me!) As for the pairing, I have no idea who will pair with whom. Christine looks stunning! What's CIB anyway?

I got a lot of great emails and comments about all the New Series Filming features I am doing @ the blog, so I decided to add something extra: Current Series Filming feature, because sometime, I saw pictures running around in sina.com, which talks about the current series silming, and as a TVB fan, you just can't miss those.

Current series filming: Steven Ma and Tavia Yeung
This series began the production in
October of 2005, currently, they are filming the snow scene with Steven and Tavia ;-) This is emotional stuff... You can read the news regarding about this filming here.

I am in the green mood

Around this time of the year, I can get really crazy about the American entertainment, because I am a huge fan of the Oscar awards (that explains why I am not very into the TVB Anniversary shows). Yesterday, I watched the Golden Globes in a super-hyper mood (I cheered like crazy for LOST and Ang Lee until my neighbors can feel the earthquake, and my parents have to leave the house and give up on me).

I am starting to wonder if Hollywood can have great award shows like Golden Globes and Oscar, why can't TVB? TVB Anniversary can only bore me to tears, while Golden Globes and Oscar can drive me insane.
To "Kate": you look stunning! I don't know what else to say. I never even like the color green before, but now, I am going crazy about wearing something green.

Cheering moment of the day

Dear Ron:

I watched the JSG Award Show more than once, and I couldn't tell if there was a boo or a cheer, but whatever it is, I didn't care. All I know is, I am mature enough to support every single TVB star, and that includes you. At least, I didn't boo at Liza Wong.

No matter what, I am supporting you all the way. So, if there was a boo, I know you can grow stronger because of it, and as a result, you will get more supporters. For you and your Silver award at JSG, I will cheer all day, all week, and all year. Thanks ;-)

TVB Square's Parental Guide

Rating Symbols adopted from: http://www.tvguidelines.org/ratings.asp

TVB series is suitable for ALL Children:
True - I heard that a lot of fans starting to watch TVB when they were 2 or 3 years old! I am not sure how much can you remember from the TVB series when you were that young, but, clearly, if a 2 or 3 years old can watch TVB series, then TVB series is suitable for all children.
False - None of TVB series is animated. Children from ages 2-6 love to watch animation, why do they even need to watch TVB?

Directed to Older Children:
True - I began to watch TVB when I was 7 or 8, don't really remember. But, that's a perfect age to start watching TVB series, because we already developed the skills to understand things on television.
False - there are suspence dramas, kiss scenes, death scenes, gun shootings, bleeding moments, almost everywhere in TVB series. Do I need to tell you to grab your parent to watch the series with you?

TVB = perfect for general audience:
True - 99% agree, there is no bad language in TVB series. It's suitable for all ages. No matter if you are 10 or 100 years old.
False - 1% agree, once an often, you will bump into a violence scene. Once an often, you will see fake blood running around. Once an often, you will see creepy character or a scary moment which can make you sleepless.

Parents Guidance Suggested:
True - take my statement above, you will expect to see creepy characters, twisting plots, unforgettable death scenes. Also, you will encounter "interesting" kiss scenes, which can make fans go hyper.
False - most of above, we can handle without grabbing a parent aside (if we are older than 10).

Mature Audience Only:
True - 0%, there is no way, TVB will make something that will totally shock you, and contain major graphic violence or rude language.
False - 100%, it's a fact, TVB doesn't make series for adults-only.

How to Draw the Line? I have no idea, you decide it youself.

Picture 1: A Step Into the Past
What? Raymond Lam dropps the baby
You may think any baby-killing scene is not for kids to watch, you might think again, because this particular baby-killing wasn't scary after all.

Picture 2: ATE 2
What? One of the most classic gun scene of TVB
There are too many TVB scenes related to weapons, how do you know if they are suitable for kids to watch? Are sword fights easier to accept than gun shootings? How many guns need to be showed on TV until someone decided to call TVB and complain?

Picture 3: RDOV
What? It's only a kiss!
TVB kiss scenes are not very technical, you don't need to cover your eyes while watching any of that.

Picture 4: The Academy
What? A typical scene with blood
If you can handle orange juice, you can handle any TVB blood scenes. Accept it, they look fake.

Picture 5: Greed Mask
What? Creepy moments
A man speaking a woman's voice, a man who is a woman, that's about the most creepy thing TVB can ever come up with, and it totally made me sleepless. But, the second time I watched it, I was laughing. Yes, it's creepy, but also fun to watch.

Picture 6: RDOV
What? A Bed Scene!
That's about the furthest shot TVB can ever do on a bed scene, don't worry, it is suitable for all ages, but I don't recommend you to watch it if you are under 10.

The bottom line is: TVB series is suitable for all ages (kind of), if there is a need to complain, you might need to watch more American TV series.

New series filming: Ronoby

New series filming, starring Ron Ng, Toby Leung, Damian Lau. The title of the series is 男人之苦, which can be translate as "Pain of the man". Toby's father has a very high position in TVB, that's why she is getting a main lead so fast. Damian will play Ron's father, and Ron will "make" Toby pregnant. Ha.. Ron is going to be a "dad" soon, and "Ronoby" is going to be the next rumor target.

It's funny, TVB just finished filming the series 女人唔易做 (Le Femme Desperado), which talks about how hard to be a woman. Now, we have this series. Why can't TVB just combine the two, and call the series "Hard to be Human"? That way, we will have Rayment and Ron working together, that will be cool, however, that's not the case...

Fast Pass, Forward and Ron

How many TVB stars can sing? A lot. How many TVB stars can dance? A few. How many TVB stars can sing and dance at the same time? If you want to use your 10 fingers (or 5) to count them all, it's do-able. Maybe this is one of the major reasons behind Ron Ng's success, and today, I decided to dedicate my blog entry to Ron, and his dance moves ;-)

Sources provided by:
Ron Online
Screen captures and analysis by:
TVB Square
* this is exclusive owned by TVB Square, do not repost it anywhere! You are welcome to link this blog entry. (http://www.tvbsquare.com/blog/2006/01/fast-pass-forward-and-ron.html)

*note: "Fast Pass" and "Fast Forward" are the names for Ron's CD
First lesson: Fast Pass: you need to know how to rotate yourself 360 degrees and still stay balanced. So, if you are standing on the floor (on a spot), and do a 360 degrees turn (fast), and then, see if you are still at the original spot or not. This requires a lot of practicing and balancing. Doing a turn is easy, but if you want to add something else (such as raising your leg, or rip off your shirt) while you are rotating, that's really hard. The bottom line is: you need to do it fast.

Second lesson: Rip Off Your Shirt (for guys only): this is the way to drive girls insane, and a way to make fans faint. However, do it when you know the technique. You can’t just rip off your shirt randomly, the movement needs to flow with the environment and the music. For example, if you see Ron ripping his shirt, you will hear fans screaming, it feels like a earthquake, and that's perfect.

Third lesson: Fast Forward: the best way to reach the audiences is to have a forward movement (fast). A forward movement can be some steps that allow you to walk towards the edge of the stage. You can also bend your waist and move forward. All these can give the audiences a feeling that you are approaching them. You also need to find at least 2 seconds to pause your dance movements and stare at the audiences.

(staring)

Fourth lesson: Be Cool: find your signature move, wear a sunglass, all these can be cool styles, be creative and have fun ;-)

New Series Filming - BoscoShirleySammulKate

New series filming: again, seeing Bosco and Shirley together. I can't tell the time period of the story base on their outfits. As for the casting, I am not expecting too much from Kate, holding my thoughts for now. Is this Sammul's last series with TVB? I heard too much rumors, need to find evidence. Shirley, looks great, and so is Bosco.

Underpromotion

Me... Stepping in the stars' shoes... (everything in the "...." are come from me, not the stars)

Nadia Chan: "don't warehouse me!"
She is one of the most welcome come-back star (according to my poll), and I love her so much because she always does her best in her series. However, her series was "warehoused" one after another!!!! Thinking back about "Doomed to Oblivion", she did an outstanding job, and the series was excellent, however, it was a warehouse series, which wasn't promoted. Think again about this year, both of her come-back series (Strike at Heart and Trimming Success) were warehoused. What's up with that?! Stop warehousing Nadia's series, TVB, please...

Wayne Lai: "I always supporting the best"
The best, and the most talented TVB supporting actor, who will never get an important leading role (if you want to count Fantasy Hotel as Wayne's leading role, go ahead, but that role wasn't strong enough). Have you notice, all the best Wayne roles are the supporting ones? Such as Conqueror's Story, Journey to the West, Greed Mask, etc, etc. When will TVB ever decide to give him a well respect leading role?

Kenneth Ma: "I am next!"
The S4, minus Kenneth, all got a lot of attention already, getting lots of leading roles. Only Kenneth hasn't get many chances yet, and it is about time for him to grab some attention. Will TVB consider him as the next "mega-hit"? I do! Since Sammul Chan is thinking leaving TVB (so far I did hear rumors), Kenneth should grab this chance...

Joyce Tang and Marco Ngai: "We are getting use to it."
Accept it, TVB might never give them very important leading roles. Even if TVB does, the series will most likely to be warehouse series (for example, Placebo Cure). Joyce is pretty and Marco is talented, that fits the qualifications of any TVB leading stars, however, that's not the case. Years after years, the fans still mention them as the supporting couple, we are getting use to that fact, and so do they.

*there are too many stars that is underpromoted under TVB, and it's not possible to list them all... thanks for reading this far..."

Astro vs. TVB Anniversary

The most interesting things I learned this month was not my school subject, it was the Astro Awards! Surely, it presents very interesting categories (much more interesting than the TVB Anniversary categories). Also, the winners of Astro were determined by fans' votes, not TVB itself! Yeah! Way to go! Don't think we will see Liza Wong winning an important Astro next year (o no.. don't shot me hate mails). Astro is also a good way to promote TVB stars, and a good way for the Malaysia fans to get a closer look at the TVB stars. Now, I think every country should have a Astro type thing going on ;-) If not, you guys can still vote for many interesting categories at the TVB Square Year-End polls.

If you want to know more about the Astro, and browse through the pictures, you can visit the following topics at the TVB Square Forum:

Must Watch of 2005

If you think 2005 series are not as good as the 2004 series, you are right. If you think there are too many series in this year, and you can't keep track of all of them, you are right. If you think I am crazy by watching all 2005 series (minus 1, gave up few), you are right. But no matter what, if you are planning to skip lots of series in 2005, don't skip the following, which made into my TOP FIVE most favorite series of 2005.

(5) Life Made Simple: sorry, it's only at the number five spot, because I am not a big fan of the modern Ah Wong. However, this series was a lot more better than I expected, so it did end up in my top 5.
(4) When Rules Turn Loose: this is the last series I watched in 2005, and I made into my top 5, it's just that amazing, and you just can't skip it. It's so emotional and so educational.
(3) The Charm Beneath: Suprising plot, I don't know what else to say, you can read my review and get most of it, but you also can not skip this series at all, doesn't matter how slow this series develops, it's a must see.
(2) Misleading Track: this is about the only series of the year, which you can not find one single part that bores you. So, watch it.
(1) Revolving Doors of Vengeance: the performances, the story, the setting, the strategies, the lessons, you can get almost everything from this series. The best of the year, simple as that!

How to Calm Down While Meeting Celebrity

Maybe it's just me, not sure why, I got extrememly nervous, and panic when I meet my favorite celebrity in real life. Just about every time, I always get nervous breakdown and went speechless right in front of my favorite celebrity! So, it's gonna happen again, on Feb. 16, I will go to my favorite basketball player's autograph session. I am gonna faint again! How do I calm myself down? Any ideas?! You can send me thoughts to tvbsquare@gmail.com or you can insert your comment here.

TVB Babyboomers

TVB Babyboomers refer to the stars who are on the edge of becoming a part of TVB's next generation... or... not. There are so many new faces in TVB, which I can't even keep track of. That's why, I am calling them the babyboomers. However, the ones who stand out the most are most likely to follow TVB's current generation's footsteps:

(1) 2C: Charles Szeto and Chris Lai - both of their first name started with the letter "C", both were being promoted by TVB for a length of time now. Both has potentials, both are some-what cute. However, they are over-shadowed by the S4, can they find their way to stand out? Time can tell.
(2) 3C: Fred Cheng, Linda Chung and Fala Chen - all of their last name started with the letter "C". Fred is cute and talented as he is already stepping into the category of Best New Star even though he is under-promoted. Linda and Fala were heavely being promoted by TVB (currently). Both girls are pretty, but can their acting skills top their looks?
(3) 2L: Leanne Li and Selena Li - who is Leanne Li? Don't ask me, because I don't have much clues. I know her name just because I read too many things about her. As for Selena, it's not surprised that she already got a line up of fans, she does have a bright future with TVB.
(4) 2Y: Vivian Yeo and Elaine Yiu - both of them are getting fans' attentions because of the series they were in. One is easy to like, the other is easy to hate. It's hard to say that they can be the next Tavia Yeung and Sonija Kwok, but for sure, they are on their way to step in the next generation.
(5) 2W: Jack Wu and Jacky Wong - both of them are not contracted by TVB, both of them are so talented. Jack has a great opportunity as an actor, and TVB should consider contracting him. Jacky is little too young to be contracted, but he is one of the best child stars.
(6) 2T: Kate Tsui and Natalie Tong - Kate is "selling" her looks by being the Miss HK, the thing she needs to work on the most is her acting skills. Natalie is "selling" her skills, I am a fan of her now, she is a talented actress and cryer.

- note: this is the continuation of my TVB New Generation topic

January Watch List - 2006

To all the Always Ready fans, I am sorry, I am giving up on that series. After watching 25 episodes, I finally decided to give up, but I did manage to watch the last 2 episodes, but in fast-forward motion. The most of the series bores me to tears. Shirley Yeung's part was the only part didn't bore me, everything else was too slow. This explains why the series got low air rating.

So, today, I am going to start When Rules Turn Loose, already heard good and bad things about it, can't wait to experience those myself.

The most anticipating series will be Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion, just like everyone else, I have been waiting for this series way too long. Plus, there are not any new series that will be aired this month (I already watched Greed Mask twice, and The Bronze Teeth 3 is give-up-able).
