TVB Square's 101 Must Watch Countdown cont.

TVB Square presents 101 Must Watch Countdown:
The countdown will last 2 more days.
This can be helpful in terms of what series you should rent or rewatch.
Timeline: 1980's to 2005
My rank in the top 11 will be very strict
Maybe, you already got an idea about my top 11, but here is why:

#11: Legend of the Condor Heroes 83 - Felix Wong, Barbara Yung
Felix + Barbara creates the best Jing Yong chemistry on screen, you can't deny it, this is THE BEST version of all time. The only reason this series didn't make into my top 10 is because I can't squeeze 11 series in top 10 list. So, you can consider this series as a tie.

#10: State of Divinity 96 - Jackie Liu, Fiona Leung
Most of the time, the remake is not as good as the original. However, for this series, it's the different way around. This story was my favorite Jing Yong story, the casts were amazing, the music was awesome (State of Divinity was about a song, and the background music in this version was THE BEST).

#09: Old Time Buddy - Francis Ng, Gallen Lo, Jessica Hsuan, Maggie Cheung
"A light comic memoir of the four hottest movies stars in the sixties through the nineties." The series has a great mixture of comedy, action, drama and romance.

#08: Detective Inventigation Files 4 - Louis Koo, Jessica Hsuan, Sunny Chan
Don't ask me why DIF 4 is my favorite DIF series, all I know was that, I was so obsessed with Louis that I wasn't able to live without watching him again and again in this series.

#07: Cold Blood Warm Heart - Chilam Cheung, Nadia Chan, Adam Cheung, Gallen Lo, Jessica Hsuan, Christine Ng
One of the best series with the biggest cast, which is also very popular. Till this day, I still think myself as a cold blood warm heart person. This series has influenced me in many ways.

#06: Greed of Men - Sean Lau, Vivian Chow, Amy Kwok, Adam Cheung
This is the most unique series, talks about the love and revenge between two generations, two families. The series also brought the stock market concept to live, and the evil Adam effect, which has a lot to do with the raise and fall of the stock market. The storyline was also the best, with the unforgettable opening and ending.

#05: Blood of Good and Evil - Deric Wan, Maggie Siu, Kitty Lai
Here goes my favorite Deric series of all time. The story focus on the relationship between a mafia family and a police family. The Chinese title of the series was also my favorite, it means, human supposed to born good. This fits the entire idea of the series very well.

#04: Duke of Mount Deer 85 - Tony Leung, Andy Lau
Tony brought the most classic Jing Yong character to live. No one else can ever top Tony and Andy's relationship in this one.

#03: Secret of the Heart - Sunny Chan, Amy Kwok, Felix Wong, Nick Cheung, Ada Choi, Gallen Lo, Kathy Chow
One of the most tortued moment of TVB history: watching the cute Nick Cheung turning purely evil. One of the most unforgettable moment of TVB history: watching Nick Cheung's room covered with ____'s blood. This is another classic series with a group of excellent stars. It used to be my most favorite series, the only reason I moved to number three is because of the way the series ends.

#02: On the Edge - Francis Ng, Deric Wan, Michael Tao, Sheren Tong
TVB makes bad endings in the new millenium. TVB makes good endings in the 90s. TVB makes great endings in the 80s. As for today, I still knock my head and say this loud, TVB makes THE BEST ending for "On the Edge"! This is why I listed this series at the number two spot, because the ending just makes the big difference. Other than the ending itself, this storyline was also one of the most emotional storyline of all time. However, not many of you watched the series, it's a pity, the series didn't get enough attention. You need to watch this series without knowing too much details, you will thank me for this. The ending is just unforgettable...

I agree with most of your rankings for the Top 11 but not Secrets of the Heart. The series has a lot of flaws and loose ends and in the end everything falls apart if you examine it closely. Kathy Chow was underused. Paul Chun's character was seemingly thrown away in the last quarter of the series. Melissa Ng's character changed too abruptly. Nick Cheung was not as convincing as the villain as Gallen Lo's turn in both Vengeance and Cold Blood, Warm Heart. Even Sunny Chan in On The Threshold Of An Era 1 was more convincing than Nick here in this series ironically. The only one turning in a great performance is Amy Kwok imho. And this should be the series that destroy Felix Wong's reputation for me. Too convincing in a stupid irrational role perhaps? That's all imho of course :-)

On the other hand, I agree with you that On The Edge has one of the best albeit tragic ending in TVB series. But it all fits in with the story of karmic retribution with Francis sacrificing his life to save Deric on the pretext that this is his karma for getting away with trafficking drugs the first time around is really sad and touching. And it is also good to see Michael To in his days as the resident TVB villain. It is amazing how he is one of very few TVB actors who managed to break out of staple villain roles to become leading men in their own rights. But it still did not warrant a ranking as high as No.2 imho :-)

The same can't be said of the ending for Cold Blood Warm Heart. It is admittedly one of the last of the better modern 'epic' series from TVB (65 episodes long!) but the ending is too sweet wrapping up things too beautifully for everyone (the same as last year's RDOV, a series I did not like although many including those on this site recommended it). Some of the side plots are also too convoluted but thank God for Gallen Lo and Chi Lam. Still, it does not deserve so high a ranking :-)

But I have to agree that The Blood Of Good and Evil is one of the very best of Deric's series, and the chemistry between him and Maggie Siu is absolutely great.

Also think that SOD is the best remake of a Jin Yong adaptation by TVB.

No secret that the No.1 show for you must be Burning Flame, a series I hated to know end. Sorry :-) Nuff said.

hehe, i guess it's very easy to know my number 1 now, lol.. but you will know why soon...

thanks for the detail comments, as for SOH, I really love the turning point of Nick, consider the fact he is playing comedian all the time. Plus, I didn't know he is turning bad until half way through the series, that's really special. Not many other villains turn bad towards the later of the series, Nick is the spcial villain to me...

i was read from somewhere, i forgot, the song tittle for SOD'96 is "Free Carrying Life", is it true ?if u know who composed please told me.

i recap the way Nick turn to bad boys in SOTH is very very similar with Gallen in CBWH, the different is Nick turn fastly, n Gallen little slow. just my opinion, why i think CBWH is better then SOTH because the story is more closer to the reality, SOTH has to much lucky factor.

DOMD is also my all time fav, Tony & Andy was great, This series make both of them to be very famous actor. i agreed if u said this one is in top ten list. ( some less factor is tony's wife not beautifull enough ---> not offense , hhaha, guy like to seen pretty galz, hehehe)

btw, u do recap series, how about if u also recap ur top ten favourite character all the time ?? because u never share about that.
    thx.

I agreed with most of your Top 10 but i am very surprised how come Vengeance doesn't even make it in top 100? I think it was like one of the best classic .. I mean, i love that series a lot .. I think Return of the Cuckoo is underated here. Chilam and Charmain have the best chemistry. He is really good. I cried along with him. I was converted into Charmaine's fan too because of this movie.
